Trumbull Academically Gifted Program

This document outlines the procedures to be followed for the 2011 – 2012 school year to identify gifted and talented students in the Trumbull Public Schools. (Printed Version)

Grade 3 Students Entering Grade 4:

  1. TAG Teachers will review the data of all third grade Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) scores to identify students who have scored a 130 or above on his or her SAI Total, Verbal or Non Verbal sections.

  2. TAG teachers will provide all third grade teachers with a letter, which lists those students who have scored a 130 or above on the OLSAT, requesting a Teacher Rating Scale be completed on each student.  At this time, third grade teachers may also nominate any other students, who may not have scored a 130 or above on the OLSAT, as a potential TAG candidate and complete a Teacher Rating Scale on those students as well.

Classroom teachers play an important role in the identification of students who may be academically gifted.  To ensure consistency among completion of the Teacher Rating Scales, the TAG teachers will work with the third grade teachers to make certain they have a thorough understanding of the categories and traits, which appear on the Teacher   Rating Scales; how to use his/her significant information about the students in his/her class to complete a profile of the student’s strengths; and how to recognize the characteristics of a “gifted learner” versus a   “bright child”.

  1. A letter will be distributed to all parents of third grade students informing them of the TAG identification procedure.

  2. Data from relevant standardized measuring instruments, which include OLSAT and Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) mathematics, CMT reading and CMT writing, as well as Teacher Rating Scale scores will be entered into an Excel Spreadsheet to sort and rank the entire third grade class district-wide.

  3. The Identification Team or Planning and Placement Team, which consists of a group of certified and/or licensed professionals, who represent each of the teaching, administrative and pupil personnel staffs will participate equally in the review of all student data to determine which students place in the top five per cent of the class and meet the qualifications for TAG identification.

  4. A letter will be sent from the Curriculum Department informing parents that their child is invited to participate in the TAG Program.

Grade 4 Students Entering Grade 5:

  1. Fourth grade teachers will have the opportunity to recommend students (new to Trumbull) who have demonstrated intellectual curiosity; task commitment; creativity with ideas; independence; and responsibility to be evaluated for participation in the fifth grade TAG Program

  2. Fourth grade teachers will complete a Teacher Rating Scale for each newly recommended student.
