The Social Host Law in Connecticut

Social hosting is providing and/or serving alcohol to a person who is under the age of 21. In Connecticut, it is illegal to host a party where alcohol is consumed by minors. Anyone under 21 is prohibited from possessing alcohol on public OR private property.

Who can be held responsible?

  • Adults, including family members and friends, who serve or provide alcohol to an underage youth, anywhere on their property.

  • Adults, including family members and friends, can be arrested if they allow under-age consumption to occur with their knowledge, even if they did not provide the alcohol.

  • Parents and homeowners even if they are not on the premises and/or did not provide the alcohol.

What are some of the consequences?

  • Individuals who knowingly permit minors to possess and/or consume alcohol may be fined, imprisoned, or both.

  • Minors can be fined and driver’s license can be suspended for violating the law.

  • You could be held civilly liable for injuries, alcohol poisoning, sexual assaults or deaths that occur.

  • You could be charged for medical bills and property damage.

  • Your homeowner’s insurance may increase.

  • Someone could be injured or die!
