Law Enforcement Activities

The Trumbull Police Dept. (TPD) has worked collaboratively with TPAUD to address the issue of underage drinking through a number of training and enforcement activities.
TipsLine

In 2009, an anonymous and untraceable TipsLine was implemented to allow Trumbull teens and residents to confidentially text the TPD with any reports of underage drinking. This provides a valuable tool for teens if they should find themselves in a potentially dangerous or illegal situation.

Alcohol Seller and Server Training
The TPD and TPAUD jointly offered alcohol server and seller training to all businesses in Trumbull that hold liquor licenses. Wait staff in bars and restaurant were offered TIPS Training, a skills-based training program designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking. Alcohol retailers were invited to a forum that delivered information from the CT Dept. of Consumer Protection on the laws around alcohol sales, as well as a law enforcement presentation on the current trends in fake IDs. Staff from the following Trumbull businesses participated in the sessions that were held in November, 2010:

Biff’s Package Store    TJ’s Discount Wine & Liquor
Bottomline Liquor    Tashua Knolls
Marisa’s Restaurant    Trumbull Liquor
Old Towne Restaurant     Trumbull Marriott
Ruby Tuesday’s    Trumbull Stop & Shop

Controlled Party Dispersal Training
In August 2010, fifteen police officers who work on the weekend evening shifts were trained in Controlled Party Dispersal, a set of operational techniques in how to prevent underage drinking parties from occurring and how to safely disperse them if they do occur.

Police Presence at the 2010 Train Concert
Trumbull Police worked collaboratively with the First Selectman’s Office and the Trumbull Rotary to ensure that underage drinkers were not served alcohol at the concert by instituting a formal ID checking procedure. Additional patrols were also in place before the concert to ensure that underage drinkers had fewer opportunities to “tailgate” in the woods and parking lots around the venue.
